City of Guelph NEWS And Interview with

Marty Williams Executive Director Downtown Guelph Business Association.

Copyright Phil Musgrave

Phil M, 1. "What will Downtown Guelph Look Like in Five Years?"

The sidewalks will be bustling with people all year round as more and more people discover and grow to love the cool shops, services, and restaurants. Vacancies will be rare, and quickly filled with an exciting new business. And because the federal and provincial governments finally decided to take the pandemic of addiction, poverty, homelessness and mental health challenges seriously, there are far fewer people left out in the cold (literally and figuratively).

Phil M 2 "What is downtown Guelph’s Biggest need?"  Investment from the City to build the Baker project that is a true mixed use development.

Phil M, 3 "Can the Guelph railway be used for transit?"

It's an intriguing idea. The number of people who live close enough to the tracks may be an issue; if it remains easier to take the bus, or walk, or bike or drive I think it's unlikely to get much use. But I would be happy to be wrong about that.

Phil M, 4 "Tell me five good things about Downtown Guelph?
The best restaurants, the best salons, the best shops, the best music venues, the best sports venue in the City.

Phil 5. "Talk about transit and go rail and bus?"

Downtown is a hub for all transit; all day two way GO is coming and that will be something that reinforces that fact. New housing developments in the core are always sold on the idea that it's easy to access in Downtown. We have to make sure we focus on getting that service drives people into the core as easily as they can leave it. For instance, if we had a College campus in Downtown it would be easier for students from the Waterloo Region to attend in Downtown Guelph than Conestoga's Doon campus; easier for Brampton students than to get to Sheridan.

Phil M "6. What about Parking?"

Parking is infrastructure like water and hydro: it's a necessary condition for businesses and all other uses to thrive. Insufficient and/or expensive parking drives people to other parts of town. It doesn't change their method of getting places. Like I always say, if you make parking difficult and/or too costly, people won't make a different transportation decision, they will make a different destination decision. --
Phil M Thank You
 Marty Williams Executive Director Downtown Guelph Business Association ;

Downtown Guelph has been here as a commercial, cultural, and civic hub for almost 200 years. We have weathered wars, depressions, recessions, and even pandemics on the scale of COVID 19. We are nothing if not resilient. We will survive. Until we are back to the other side of this crisis please be safe. Practice “social distancing.” Wash your hand
s. And above all, be kind.

Poems

LIFE ON A PLATE
The man sat
On a flat rock
Bicycle beside
Tent wet from the rain before
Never rich most never middle class
Talking to the nun
$300.00
Your life on a plate
All the fine music
To wash it away
I love you
Now you're older
My hearing's not so good
So you say it with hands
As you always did.

Rebecca
Rebecca I did not know
The pain you hid
37
Not very long
Gone now
leaving us here behind on the bus
to continue
A patient mother
An advisor
Just wow in that brown jumper
Working out
Your conversation warmed my winter bus stop
I already miss you
Short Shorts
Woodpecker steal
Lolipop
Up
You in short shorts
Rapping on a tree
Summer green yellow
And red winged blackbird
In the bulrushes standing tall
Singing robin a girls name
Before the rain
Finch sparrow
And the little yellow bird
Can’t remember

Because you in short shorts
Heavenly Hash
I tried to be a good man
I wasn’t really bad
But when I met St.Peter
He said take out the trash

The thought did pass that he
Ment me and i was going down
Then came the commanding voice
Gate 12 other side of town

He pointed with a finger
A hallmarked gates 2-16
2 was lesser sinner
3 was dogs and cats
12 of course was trash

So now I work gate 12
Throwing out the heavenly trash
Landscapes and Birds
