Chapter 9
The funeral service for Papa Emma’s paternal grandfather had been difficult, Emma “Dad I don’t qualify for any money yet I don’t fit the model,” and I have no Idea about summer work. Emma’s Dad Foster O'brien was a research scientist working for a manufacturing company he was still employed on a shortened work week, “Emma we will always do the best we can for you. When I think about it right now I would say don’t be a Vet, a Medical Doctor or a Nurse.”
“I know the life of a student is hard. I lived through it myself. It is a time of searching for meaning and purpose. That time in life can be a delight. You meet many new people. Maybe not so much now though with the virus.”
“How is Christoper holding up?”
Emma “well he can’t play varsity hockey anymore and he can’t work out in the Gym” “he’s Frustrated before he came to live with me he was renting a room in a house with five other students.”
Foster, “Emma I don’t often give you advice, but these are strange times. The first thing is don't let me hear the word pregnancy. The second is don’t use credit cards as much. The fact that the government has not forced interest rates down makes me think there is an agenda. And you don’t want any of that.
“I do think that the rich are vulnerable too. It would be unfair if death came only to the poor.
Also try to be humble, compassionate and true to yourself, and do not overindulge in anything.”
Emma “Oh Dabby, Daddy, Daddy, You care so much”
Foster “Oh Shut up.”
“And one other thing, plenty of exercise, but hang on to that car of yours it is your escape and good for your mental health.
“Dad, you’re way too much to deal with, lighten up.”
My dear Emma I am 64 now and Just a little scared.
Christopher was Studying after the drive home from the service. He suddenly started talking. “ Emma, I sit here trying to study my history course, and I can’t read the thing". "If I handed in something like this I would get an F.”
“No punctuation and run on sentences, I suppose this writing is supposed to be academic style." "The old stuffed shirt, you should see his exam questions." It is like he is trying to turn an orange into a lemon." "Some of these courses need to be updated and they could get rid of some of the old fossils on campus.” Emma was laughing “Christopher go for a run.
